The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, more popularly known as simply USP, is a private university in Philadelphia, US Pennsylvania state's largest city, and the sixth most populous city in USA, its population being approximated at a number of more than 1.54 million inhabitants, during the 2008 census. Philly, or The City of Brotherly Love, as Philadelphia is also known, is the 4th largest consumer media market, as well, as ranked by the Nielsen Media Research, including the nation's 4th largest urban area, by population.
USP was established in 1821 and it adopted its current name in July, 1998. The university currently offers its students, who number approximately 3000, bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, in a large variety of study areas and health disciplines. Originally known as Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, it was the 1st college of pharmacy in North America, and this fact is stated in its motto: `The first college of pharmacy in North America`.
USP's sports teams call themselves the Devils, and they compete in 11 varsity teams in Division II NCAA, CACC and ECAC. Their distinctive colors are crimson and gray and their mascot is Drake the Devil.
Over the years, USP has produced numerous notable alumni, among the most noteworthy ones also being: John Wyeth - founder of John Wyeth & Brother, now part of Wyeth, Richard DeKany - founder of Pinecliff Pharmacy, Robert L. McNeil, Jr. - chairman and CEO of McNeil Laboratories Inc, now part of Johnson & Johnson (campus building named after him), Martin Wilbert - pharmacy, pioneering use of X-rays, Gerald F. Rorer - founder of Rorer Pharmaceuticals, now part of Sanofi-Aventis, plus others.
